CNIH & College of the Rockies Establish Referral Program

  College of the Rockies As of January 2011, CNIH established a referral program with College of the Rockies (COTR) in Cranbrook, B.C. intended to facilitate the transfer of prospective students, and dental assistant graduates from the College of the Rockies that are interested in pursuing the Dental Hygiene Program at the CNIH. This partnership between the colleges provides the dental assistant graduates from COTR with a clear option to pursue an accredited dental hygiene program outside British Columbia. Read More >>

CNIH Fall 2011 Mentorship Program

On Tuesday, November 15th, the Canadian National Institute of Health Inc. hosted its Fall 2011 Mentorship Program Orientation Session. The Meet and Greet had an outstanding turnout, which included the eight senior student Mentors and their respective forty Mentees. The Mentorship Program at CNIH mirrors the CDHO New Registrant Mentorship Programin terms of recognizing mentoring as a means for professional growth and fostering leadership within the profession. Braving the Needle

On November 4th, the Canadian National Institute of Health held its first on-site flu clinic. Nurses’ from GEM Health Care Services Inc. provided a successful immunization clinic in a friendly environment, making it easier for the participating 50+ student dental viagra and faculty to ‘brave’ the needle. The flu shot is a requirement for student dental hygienists at CNIH who provide care to  vulnerable population of clients. CNIH Faculty, Relationship Building with Students

On October 6, 2011, the CNIH faculty attended a workshop, in the series of CNIH Educator’s Workshops, entitled: Relationship Building Concepts for Instructors. The workshop was facilitated by Sara Weaver, SMW, MBA, the CNIH school counselor. The learning objectives were to increase instructor awareness of the power of relationships on the learning experience, open dialogue about the student-instructor relations with the goal of continuous improvement and to empower all members of the CNIH team. CNIH and Everest College Establish a Partnership

CNIH has established a partnership with Everest College Campuses throughout Ontario designed to support each institution by establishing: 1) a referral scholarship program, 2) exchange of materials and services and 3) an inter-professional collaboration between the colleges. CNIH will fund a scholarship program of $1000.00 for every Everest College Dental Assisting graduate that joins the CNIH Dental Hygiene Program. To qualify, the selected student requires a minimum academic achievement of 80% in their program. Read More >>

CNIH Summer BBQ – A Real “Splash”

  The CNIH held it’s annual summer BBQ on August 18th and treated the student body to great food, drinks and to have an opportunity to show a few in the college that they are “all wet”. CNIH brought in a carnival style ball pitch – dunk tank and many students lined up to take a shot at hitting the target. CNIH Dental Hygienists Grads Make The Grade

Graduates from Dental Hygiene programs throughout the country are required to write and pass the National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination (NDHCE) in order to become registered as a Dental Hygienist. Of the 33 new graduates who wrote the examination for the first time in May 2011, 32 passedrepresenting a 97% success rate. CNIH 2011 Spring Graduation

The CNIH was proud to celebrate its eighth convocation on March 28th, 2011 at Ben Franklin Place Council Chambers. Thirty-six Graduates were presented their Diploma in Dental Hygiene in the room filled with proud parents, friends and invited guests. CNIH Lobby’s City of Ottawa for Student Bus Pass Privileges

OC Transpo On February 24th, Jeff Cuffe the Director of Program Development at the CNIH delivered a 5 minute presentation to the Interim Transit Commission at City Hall on behalf of the 100 full-time students and 40 faculty and administration. Cutting Edge Invisalign Presentation at CNIH

Invisalign On February 18, 2011 Dr. Ben Fong delivered a presentation on Invisalign to the term 3 CNIH student dental hygienists and faculty.  The 2 hour presentation was enriched with case studies of Invisalign clients, this included clin-chek video demonstrations, treatment planning, the role of the registered dental hygienists in orthodontic treatment  and the uses of invisalign to compliment cosmetic dentistry cases. CNIH Launches Video Camera Initiative

Lights Camera Action CNIH students get to capture a day in the life of a dental hygienist as they record anything they think is interesting, funny, educational and informative whether it is in class, the hallway, the cafeteria, the class room or dental clinic. The purpose is to use selected images in the development of a video clip that can be posted on You Tube and or be used in a promotional piece regarding CNIH school spirit. Random Acts of Kindness Break Out at CNIH

To celebrate the holiday season CNIH students participated in a Random Acts of Kindness event. One student was selected each week during the holiday to be the winner of the competition. Students were nominated by their peers for acts of kindness they had demonstrated around the school and towards their classmates. Our first Random Acts of Kindness winner was Baiping Niu. Baiping received many nominations from his peers. It is clear that his kindness toward his peers is noticed and appreciated. Congratulations! Oral Health Matters at the Perley and Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre

On Thursday, January 6th, 2011 the allied health support staff, family, and friends learned about the latest in oral health for the senior population. Dental hygiene students from the CNIH as well as the dental industry presented educational displays. Donna Harteveld, the Field Placement Instructor with CNIH, organized the event that attracted over 150 participants. The feedback from the professional staff which included the resident dental hygienist and the Manager of Nursing Practice commented on how informative and well received the program was for everyone who attended. CNIH Raffle/Food Drive Benefit Ottawa Mission

The CNIH held its Annual Christmas 50/50 raffle on December 16th that raised a total of $78 of which half the profits along with all nonperishable food items collected throughout the month were then donated to the Ottawa Mission. The Ottawa Mission organization helps homeless men in Ottawa by providing a roof overhead and warm meal for those in need.  It also offers an addictions treatment program, learning centre, dental clinic, hospice, primary care clinic, and various training programs. CNIH Staff Celebrate Year End

The CNIH President hosted a Holiday Party at the Casino Lac Leamy for the staff of CNIH to celebrate another fantastic year. Gingerbread House Competition Is a Hit!

Gingerbread Competition Before the Winter Holiday break, CNIH students participated in numerous festivities to get us in the holiday mood. My favorite was the Gingerbread house decorating contest. The school provided each term with a gingerbread house and candy to help decorate. Each term spent an hour decorating. New Chair for CNIH Advisory Board

On July 28th, 2010 the CNIH held a dental hygiene advisory board meeting and invited executives from the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (Laura Myers & Ann Wright), Dentist (Dr. Ben Fong), Dental Hygienist (Rosemary Vaillant) as well as CNIH Alumni (Ashley Harris, Krista Crawley, Sophie Lanctot) to provide feedback on topics to enhance and improve the CNIH dental hygiene program. CNIH Holds Oral Health Fair

Dental Hygiene students for the CNIH hosted an Oral Health Fair to assist in the education of the professional staff, administration and the senior residents at the Stillwater Creek Retirement Residence held November 26th, 2010. Ten table top displays were set up to present on a host of topics including oral cancer, fluoride treatment, halitosis, aspiration pneumonia, denture care, dysphagia, oral hygiene for arthritic hands, smoking cessation and oral hygiene for the senior client. CDHA Congratulates Newfoundland and Labrador Dental Hygienists

For the last 10 years, CDHA has been working collaboratively with the Newfoundland and Labrador Dental Hygienists Association (NLDHA) and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to achieve self-regulation.  That day has finally arrived!
